Exciting New Changes for Evansdale Elementary!

Evansdale Elementary has some exciting changes on the horizon and the Evansdale Elementary PTA needs your help to spread the word.

First, Evansdale Elementary has been selected as a launch site for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Certification by the Georgia Department of Education. DCSS selected Evansdale as a launch site due to the school’s past and continuing commitment to STEM activities. As a result of being selected, Evansdale will receive:

• Professional Training & Education for School Faculty
• Supplies & Materials for Classroom Implementation and Teaching of STEM Strategies
• STEM Lab Equipment

Additionally, the school will work with community partners to help reinforce and supplement STEM learning in the classroom. To learn more about Evansdale’s STEM initiatives, Like Evansdale Elementary STEM on Facebook.

Next, Evansdale was chosen by the state department of education as a pilot site for its dual immersion language program in French. Beginning with the 2014 school year, two Evansdale Kindergarten classes will be taught in French and English, giving students a great foundation in language learning. Children in those two classes will receive instruction of the regular core curricula in English for half the day and in French for half the day.  The teaching team will consist of one English speaking teacher and one French speaking teacher who will share the two classes.  Children in the dual immersion program will still experience regular specials such as music, art, PE, and science lab. A lottery will be conducted to determine which children will be in those two classes. (You can read more at the Georgia Department of Education.)

Finally, Evansdale’s magnet program has been revamped so that now, rather than a single magnet class in each grade, Evansdale is a magnet school, with all students receiving the benefits of the school’s magnet language program!

If you have a rising Kindergarten student or know someone in the Evansdale area with a future Eagle, please share this information with them. You are also invited to attend a “Coffee and Conversation” event on May 6th at 8 a.m. in the cafeteria to receive more details about these and other exciting events within our neighborhood school. For parents who prefer Spanish, another event will be held on May 3rd from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

As a reminder, children entering Kindergarten must turn 5 on or before September 1st.

Evansdale Elementary invites you to share this information with anyone you know who may have a child eligible for Kindergarten at Evansdale this coming fall. You may also ask them to call the school directly at 678.874.2702 or they may contact our PTA Welcome Committee atevansdaleptawelcome@gmail.com. English speakers can also call Angie Claussen at 770.414.5464; Spanish speakers, Myriam Quispe at 404.663.3248.

Did You Eat Your Veggies at Sprig?

How many of you ate your veggies at Sprig? A big thank you to local eatery Sprig Restaurant and Bar for hosting our Tuesday Night Bites event this week. We LOVED their veggie taste test idea for the kids! The kids were given a plate of th ree seasonal veggies (brussels sprouts, beets, or swiss chard) to taste. The rules: You have to taste (and swallow) each of the veggies. Then, Sprig provided each child with a sheet for them to a) check that they tasted the vegetable, b) specify whether or not they liked each one, and c) Draw their favorite of the three. All children who completed the taste test received a free ice cream for dessert. The kids LOVED it. And they ate their veggies!

Eagles Trek, Evansdale Soars

Pleasant surprises, especially those that cause you to pause, reflect, and smile because they’ve warmed your heart, are some of the best experiences life has to offer. That’s how we feel about Eagle Trek. Now that its evolution from concept to reality is complete. Now that we can bask in the light of its pleasant surprise, our hearts are warmed. From the earliest days, when Eagle Trek was still a concept being researched and deliberated, we knew we had an opportunity to partner with the PTA to do more with less. To raise more money and increase family and student participation, while spending less through a single fundraiser. However, that voice of caution, that conservative thread that runs through any organization that takes their fiscal responsibility seriously, made us a little nervous. Read more
