Eagle Trek Announces $10,000 Anonymous Donor Challenge

Begins Wednesday September 24th

Our Evansdale Eagles have done a great job so far but have a way to go to meet our goal of $65,000.
Here’s your chance to make every dollar count, twice!

Starting Wednesday, Sept. 24, an anonymous donor has agreed to match donations up to $10,000! The donor challenge is 5 days (ends 9/29/14) so make it count!
Remember all the ways you can help make this happen:

Set your fundraising goal for your family and review with your students to get them involved. There are some fun prizes including an unlimited pass for Fantastic Friday at the $1,000 level.

Help your Eagle go door-to-door with the offline pledge form (and ribbons) to ask for support for the Walk-A-Thon. Get out there!

Use your online donation page to email to friends, family, neighbors or colleagues that might be interested in supporting our school. Share your photos and donation page on social media to help spread the word even more. Check out this great video and share it.

Remind all your donors that their contributions are tax-deducible and all the money stays at our school (vs. an outside company) thanks to our generous event sponsors.

Remember families who may not have Evansdale students anymore will still want to support their neighborhood school. We’re all in this together!

EAGLE TREK is Thursday, Oct. 2, and all students participate!

This is the largest fundraiser of the year that benefits both the Evansdale Education Foundation as well as the Evansdale PTA.

Thank you for helping us take flight this year.

Third Annual Walk-A-Thon Kicks off September 5!EagleTrek_Logo_2014_15-01

Evansdale Eagles, are you ready to TAKE FLIGHT?  It’s time for the biggest fundraiser of the year that benefits both our dynamic PTA and supports the Evansdale Education Foundation.  Our goal is $65,000 and with your help we can do it yet again!

On Thursday September 4th, students will participate in a pep-rally and the next day they’ll bring home everything you need to help us make this the best Eagle Trek yet!  It’s really simple. Here are a few tips:

– Work as a family to set a fundraising goal.  Involve your child in the process, consider your family’s donation and decide who else in your circle of friends, family and colleagues will help support your Eagle with a donation.  The kids will love the prizes, and you’ll love knowing your tax-deductible donation stays here at the school!

– Set up a personalized fundraising website for your family (only one page needed per family). Instructions are inside the brochure. Follow the instructions to share your page via e-mail and social networks, and start asking for pledges!

-You’ll receive special ribbons to give to donors for their door or mailbox as a symbol of their Eagle Trek pride and support!

– If you are not fundraising online, you can track pledges on the enclosed sheet. We’ll collect them every week with prizes for the children.

Participate! We are proud of how many families participated last year.  We can easily hit our goal if everyone participates at some level, no matter how small.

Walk!  All students will receive a free t-shirt and walk with their class on October 2. Come help us count laps and cheer on our Eagles!

Looking ahead to our 5th year!

In the Beginning….

In the summer of 2010 a small but engaged group of families came together with an idea:  to create a foundation with a mission to provide “direct financial support to help Evansdale Elementary realize its full potential… driven by our love and passion for current and future Evansdale students.”  The task was daunting but our community quickly rallied to meet the challenge.    Five years later we’ve witnessed many changes in our school however our commitment and guiding principles remain the same.

Some of those original individuals served on our board since the foundation’s inception and we are extremely grateful for their dedication to Evansdale and contributions to the organization’s success.  Specifically, we want to say thank you and good bye to three amazing long term and founding board members:  Devon Christopher, Rachel VanValkenberg and Phil Castro, all of whom provided countless hours of guidance and leadership for our school.

However we are very excited to welcome the next generation of board members who will serve in at large positions: Jerry Appleman, Chris GarnerCynthia JonesChristofer Peterson and Sally Kramer.   While our board provides day to day guidance, we’ll turn to our community throughout the year for volunteers to assist with a variety of fundraising efforts.

Fundraising Successes for 2013-2014

We are excited to share another successful year of fundraising for Evansdale.  A combination of our Eagle Trek Walk-A-Thon in the fall, our spring Red, Hot & Blue auction along with corporate donations and grants raised $102,000 for our school!  This brings the total amount raised since 2010 to more than $387,000!

The Evansdale Education Foundation extends its deepest appreciation to all of our donors and sponsors, at every level.

Investments and PTA Partnerships
For the second year we aligned our fall fundraising with Evansdale’s amazing PTA.  By combining forces, a portion of the money you helped us raise through Eagle Trek provided our PTA with the funding needed to offer programs reaching every single child at the school: from world class cultural arts performances and assemblies, to technology enhanced learning, student gardens, and more.Working with school leadership, we are excited to continue on this collaboration for the 2014-2015 year and we look forward to sharing news of potential upcoming investments to support technology within the classroom and Evansdale’s STEM initiatives.
Strategic investments to support our teaching staff were critical this year: specifically helping our faculty better prepare to implement the Common Core curriculum and implement more STEM offerings in the classroom.   Before the last school year began, 15 teachers participated in a multi-day training event to learn more about the Orton-Gillingham Approach.   Also known as “OG”, this teaching method is most often associated with a one-on-one teacher-student instructional model and is used in small group instruction as well as classroom instruction. Additionally, eight homeroom teachers received training in the “Daily Five” program designed to enhance language arts instruction in the classroom though a fun, hands on approach to literacy.

However our largest investment to date continues to be our reading specialist and head of the Early Intervention Program (EIP), Jaqueline Whited.  A full time-employee of Evansdale for the past two years, she has reached hundreds of students with specialized reading instruction, helping to close the achievement gap within our school and increase students’ future chances of success.   This pull-out model of instruction allows for smaller class sizes overall and a chance for more individualized instruction and small group interactions.   During the past school year Jaqueline assisted nearly 80 students in grades 2-5, whose overall literacy skills improved by almost 20% in the past year alone. Thanks to your generosity, Ms. Whited’s position as a full-time specialist is secured again for the 2014-2015 school year.

The importance of our EIP investment:  “Great teachers, like the ones at Evansdale, give 110% to differentiate the instruction to meet all their students’ needs. As the EIP teacher, I help the teachers by focusing on the students who need extra help. This gives them time to give more energy to the on-grade level and above grade level students.”– Jacqueline Whited, EIP Specialist
Help Us as We Enter Year Number Five!
Finally, as a Foundation created to serve the needs of all Evansdale students we need to hear from you.  How can we work together as we approach our 5thyear?Our board members are always here to answer any questions and we welcome your feedback, ideas, and suggestions on how we can work together to build a first-class, neighborhood school.Reach out at any time via email: info@evansdalefoundation.org and be sure to connect with us online.

Wishing you and your family a fun, relaxing and safe rest of your summer.  We look forward to serving you in the coming year.

Our Volunteer of the Year: Denise Tso

Volunteer of the Year: Denise Tso

Volunteer of the Year: Denise Tso

Denise Tso, mother of two Evansdale Eagles and a founding board member is our very deserving recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award.    This recognition, now in its second year (awarded last year to Lucy Foley of Modern South Studios) is designed to recognize extensive volunteer work by individuals serving outside of the board.

Denise was a founding member of the foundation and from day one did not hesitate to problem solve and take immediate action to tackle whatever needed to be done. Initially she took the lead on building a relationship with DeKalb County so that we could maintain support as we built on our mission and developed as an organization. She was part of the small group that recognized our school’s need for a foundation when funding for critical programs was at risk.   Read more

Thank You for Another Amazing Year!

Dear Friends of Evansdale Elementary,

Many of us were recently at Evansdale the evening of May 16th for the final PTA meeting of the school year and the “No Talent, Talent Show”. As expected, it was a special night for many reasons. To witness the recognition of Colicia Hanson as the PTA’s much deserving volunteer of the year, the heartfelt comments from incoming and outgoing PTA board members, and the entertaining, earnest and adorable talents of so many Eagles was a wonderful way to close out the school year.

As we wrap up another amazing year at Evansdale, we’re reminded that moments like the evening of May 16th are not uncommon. Ours is a truly special school and extraordinary community. The inaugural Eagle Trek was a supremely successful partnership between your PTA and foundation. The 3rd annual, Red, Hot & Blue spring auction, attended by more than 175 members of our community, was another huge success. Overall, more than 1,000 people across 5 countries and 28 states, donated to our cause this year to raise more than $90,000 for our beloved school. Since forming the foundation just under 3 years ago, we’ve raised more than $215,000 to help Evansdale realize its full potential. This is truly astounding and we can’t thank you enough for your amazing support.

As we look forward, our future is bright. We continue to have dedicated parents and skilled staff. Our students are interested and engaged learners who are now supported by a refreshed and reinvigorated school board. New and exciting educational opportunities in the form of STEM and French Immersion are on the horizon. We have effective collaboration among parents, administrators, PTA, School Council and foundation. Together, we are well equipped to sustain and develop Evansdale’s heritage of educational excellence.

In closing, we want to welcome our new board members and thank our departing board members for their outstanding service. We are excited about the skills and energy Lauren Shankman, Anne Craddock, Jennifer Allen, Chris Foley, Jennifer McGaughey, Myriam Quispe-Agnoli, Genny Tuggey, and Scott Vanags will bring to our board and mission. As for our departing board members, additional comments are in order…

  • JC Boyanton – You have been our pioneering and fearless leader for three years. You were instrumental in directing our fledgling foundation through unknown and uncharted territory. Early challenges and obstacles were overcome, important decisions and milestones were achieved, and vital procedures and policies were established, in large part, because of your leadership. We were once an idea with potential. We are now a reality with impact. You led the way.
  • Susan Ponder – We raised over $90,000 this year. More than ever before. After the success we had our first two years, that’s amazing. All of our fundraising efforts are vibrant, healthy and well positioned for the future because of you. We cannot thank you enough!
  • Zuzette Estevez – Let us count the ways you will be missed…As an event planner extraordinaire and Red, Hot & Blue stalwart. As Nominating Committee Chair hunting for committed and talented new board members with the skill of a bloodhound. As a vocal and insightful board meeting participant. Must you leave?
  • Anne Johnson – You have played an integral role in all things communications. From helping establish our tone and brand to providing invaluable editing expertise. From managing email distributions to Facebook posts and Twitter feeds. From publishing a world class newsletter to administering an excellent web site. But most of all, you’ve been the best partner a Communications Committee Chair could hope for!
  • Heather Hawkins – You made a measurable, meaningful difference from the start and throughout. Thank you for your outstanding service to the Investment and Nominating Committees. Your calm, balanced nature and willingness to help in countless ways will not be forgotten!
  • Elaine Gold – You’ve represented your colleagues superbly and we thank you for being an effective liaison with Evansdale’s wonderful teachers. Your commitment to our mission is greatly appreciated and your input will be missed!
  • Cynthia McGuinness – Free money is difficult to come by, especially during a recession. Nonetheless, you searched high and low for grant opportunities for the foundation and Evansdale as a whole. Thanks for helping our Eagles soar even higher!

The term for our 2013-14 Board of Directors begins June 1, 2013 and they are listed below for your reference. (Our Board page will be updated accordingly soon; open committee chair positions will be filled over the summer.)

We hope you have a great summer and thanks again for another amazing year!
